Spriting troubles
Feb 20, 2011 at 7:13 pm by Jay
I spent some time this weekend attempting to start up spriting with the remaining NPCs that need to be overhauled. I wanted to start with what I thought would be an easy target: the Oller. It's a lizard-like creature that only has two legs. Unfortunately, I was completely wrong in my thinking there. Apparently, at least for me, it's incredibly difficult to draw a lizard-like creature that looks unique (only two legs), but also natural. Originally, the sprite was just as large as a Flowrian -- something I definitely wanted to change. The Oller should be somewhere between a Negg and a Flowrian, size-wise.

Getting a decent amount of detail into a complex sprite is turning out to be difficult for me. I iterated a bunch, trying out different lizard styles, etc. So far, nothing has suited my tastes yet. I am beginning to think I may potentially need to give the Oller a new base-design. Most likely that will entail the creature having four legs instead of two; something that will hopefully help me in getting a good-looking sprite going.

While the first few attempts were failures, I'm hoping that if I keep chipping away at it I'll eventually end up with something nice-looking. I was able to pull that off with the main character, so here's to not giving up!
